ABR - Diagnostic

Auditory Brain Stem Response Testing. The ABR is a non-invasive procedure which studies the neural integrity of the VIII Cranial (Auditory) Nerve and pathway. It specifically targets the pathway as it exits the innter ear, where the pathways of hearing and balance reside in the inner ear. The ABR is a very sensitive test to rule out benign tumors which sometimes grow in that area, putting pressure on the pathways that carry information about hearing and balance to the higher cortical areas of the brain. It also helps in the diagnosis of conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis.

Tinnitus Diagnostics & Management

Noise in the ear. Tinnitus is usually a subjective sound that only the patient can hear in their ear or head. Tinnitus can be caused by many different conditions directly or indirectly associated with the hearing system. The role of the audiologist is to provide assessment of the auditory system to determine whether there is a strong relationship between the tinnitus and auditory dysfunction.

Tympanometry

Tests of the middle ear. Tympanometry is an objective test that gives the audiologist a wealth of information about the eardrum, ossicles (middle ear bones), eustachian tube and related structures. It can detect very small perforations in the eardrum that cannot always be seen during visual inspection. Further, it can track medical treatment of middle ear infection and fluid. In cases of suspected surgical remediation of hearing loss, it can support the diagnosis by the physician prior to middle ear surgical exploration.

Video Otoscopy

'Seeing' the ear. Video Otoscopy is a procedure whereby the audiologist can view the eardrum and ear canal structures through a fiberoptic instrument, which is typically displayed on a small television monitor. It is an excellent counseling and teaching tool that allows the patient to learn about issues such as impacted ear wax, what a ventilation tube looks like in the ear drum, etc.
